An old Quad FM4 tuner needed to be repaired as it wasn’t allowing any stations to be stored or sometimes to be tuned in at all.

The tuner uses an old Texas Instruments TMS1000 a 4 bit microcontroller that was once used in the TI ‘Speak and Spell’ machine back in the 70s!

Radio stations in the FM4 are stored in the processors memory which is backed up via a rechargeable battery.
The battery had been replaced previously but the old one had left a considerable amount of corrosive muck on the board and the processor socket where it had been leaking.
A handful of new parts and a clean up of the circuit board had the tuner working again.
Below is a short video I made about the repair that I’ve uploaded to my YouTube channel. Please subscribe to the channel to be alerted to new videos and help grow the channel.
