A faulty Genelec 1029a active speaker kept blowing the 1A mains fuse fitted on the circuit board.

This is an older type of active speaker as it uses a conventional transformer as the power supply and two class AB amplifier ICs rather than a switch mode PSU and digital amplifier.

One amplifier drives the tweeter, the other the main woofer / midrange unit. There’s a lot of op-amp circuitry being used as an active crossover.

The fuse was blowing due to a faulty mains transformer. Sourcing a suitable replacement took a bit of working out as the old transformer was a custom made one with no voltage or VA information printed on it.

A new transformer was sourced and the speaker worked as it should.

The long bolts seen in the above photo are used to hold the speaker drive units against the front baffle. Basically you do them up from the back panel just enough to hold the drivers in place.

It’s not the best system, as the tweeter bolt gets near the tweeter its magnet pulls it onto the bolt moving it off centre.
